How to measure walls and ceilings for paint
By Srikanta M · Updated 2026-09-26 · 6 min read · Formula v1.0.0 verified 2026-09-10
Add length × height per wall, include the ceiling only when it shares paint, and deduct doors (~21 sq ft) and windows. A 13×10 ft room at 8 ft high gives 377 sq ft gross and 355 sq ft net after one 22 sq ft door.
What formula gives wall square footage?
Net measurement is geometric: each stretch contributes length × height. The ceiling is added separately. Openings come off in full.
This figure feeds paint, drywall and wallpaper. An error here carries through gallons, buckets and price.
net = Σ(length × height) + ceiling − openings
How much comes off per door and window?
Deduct the full opening including trim. Standard US residential sizes work for estimating when you cannot tape every opening.
Typical residential openings (area to deduct)
| Opening | Typical size | Deduct |
|---|---|---|
| Interior door | 32 × 80 in | 17.8 sq ft |
| Wide door | 36 × 80 in | 20 sq ft |
| Double slider | 72 × 80 in | 40 sq ft |
| Single window | 32 × 48 in | 10.7 sq ft |
| Double window | 56 × 56 in | 21.8 sq ft |
| Unpainted closet front | by width × height | full area |
How do you measure a room step by step?
Tape in feet, keep one unit through the sum. Log each wall separately: stretches with different finishes go on separate counts.
- Walls 1 and 3: 13 ft × 8 ft = 104 sq ft each.
- Walls 2 and 4: 10 ft × 8 ft = 80 sq ft each.
- Gross: 104 + 104 + 80 + 80 = 368 sq ft (34.2 m²).
- Minus door 22 sq ft → net 346 sq ft.
Is the ceiling always included?
Only when it takes the same paint and coats. White flat ceiling plus satin color walls are two counts: about 130 sq ft of ceiling (13×10) apart from 346 sq ft of wall.
The area calculator keeps a separate ceiling field for this reason.
Worked example: Room 13×10 ft, 8 ft high, one door
- Walls: 2×(13×8) + 2×(10×8) = 368 sq ft
- Openings: door 22 sq ft
- Net: 346 sq ft; with 5% measuring margin: 363 sq ft
→ Order paint for 346 sq ft net (363 sq ft with margin).
Common mistakes
- Quoting the perimeter (46 ft) as square footage without multiplying by height.
- Skipping unpainted closet fronts: a 30 sq ft front saves nearly a quart per coat.
- Mixing inches and feet: a 156 in × 8 ft wall is 104 sq ft, not 1,248.

FAQs
- Do I deduct the whole door or just the slab?
- The full opening with trim, about 18–20 sq ft per interior door. That is standard paint-takeoff practice and what the area calculator applies.
- How do I measure a vaulted ceiling room?
- Split the gable into rectangle + triangle: base × average height. A 13 ft gable from 8 to 12 ft counts 13 × 10 = 130 sq ft per end.
- Do outlets and switches come off?
- No: under 0.5 sq ft each. Deduct only doors, windows and unpainted fronts.
- Inside or outside the trim?
- Outside: cutting around trim costs time even where it saves no gallons, and the full opening is what stays unpainted.
- Does this count work for drywall?
- Yes: the same net feeds boards (divide by 32 sq ft per 4×8 sheet) and framing. Waste changes, measurement does not.
