Asphalt: calculate and quote

Hot mix asphalt tonnage, sealcoat coverage and crack filler.

Calculators

How is hot mix asphalt calculated?

Area times compacted depth gives volume; compacted density (about 145 lb/ft³) gives tons to order. Add a little waste and schedule trucks so material arrives hot.

A compacted aggregate base matters as much as the asphalt — without it you get ruts and cracks.

How do you maintain asphalt?

Seal cracks as they appear, sealcoat every 2–4 years and patch potholes before they grow. Water through cracks weakens the base and speeds failure.

The sealcoat and crack filler calculators give gallons, tubes and pails.

Asphalt, concrete or pavers?

Asphalt is cheaper and faster; concrete lasts longer with less upkeep; pavers can be repaired piece by piece and look more decorative. It depends on traffic, budget and style.

For driveways, 2–3 in of asphalt over a good base is usually enough.

FAQs

How much does asphalt weigh?
Compacted hot mix weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot (2.3 t/m³).
How thick should a driveway be?
2–3 in (5–8 cm) of compacted asphalt over a gravel base.
How often should I sealcoat?
Every 2–4 years extends pavement life considerably.
How long does asphalt take to cool?
A few hours for foot traffic; 24 h or more for cars depending on temperature.
Can you pave in winter?
Cold weather cools the mix before compaction; aim for above 50 °F.
What is prime coat?
An emulsion sprayed on the base to help asphalt bond.
