How it's calculated (visible formula)
tons = area × compacted depth × (1 + waste) × density
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the area to pave.
- Set compacted depth.
- Work out volume and add 5% waste.
- Convert to tons with compacted density.
- Work out truckloads and schedule the paver.
Worked example: 1,076 sq ft driveway at 2⅜ in
- ≈ 6 m³ (212 cu ft)
- +5% × 145 lb/ft³ ≈ 16.3 short tons
→ About 16 tons (14.8 t) — one truck.
Common mistakes
- Using loose depth instead of compacted.
- Forgetting the gravel base.
- Skipping tack coat.
Pro tips
- Compact the base before paving.
- Apply tack coat between lifts.
- Lay and roll hot — cold mix won't compact.
- Slope 1–2% for drainage.

- About 145 lb per cubic foot compacted (2.3 t/m³).
- How thick should a driveway be?
- 2–3 in of asphalt over 6–8 in of compacted base.
- How many sq ft per ton?
- About 80 sq ft at 2 in.
- How long before I can drive on new asphalt?
- Usually 2–3 days; avoid sharp turns for weeks.
- Cold patch or hot mix?
- Cold patch for potholes; hot mix for new pavement.
- How much does a driveway cost?
- It depends on depth, base and equipment access.
