How to calculate it, step by step

Measure wall length and exposed height plus the buried course.
Divide height by block height for the number of courses.
Divide length by block length for blocks per course.
Multiply, add 5% waste and the cap blocks.
Work out drainage gravel, drain pipe and filter fabric.

Worked example: 33 ft × 32 in wall with 16 × 8 in blocks

32 ÷ 8 = 4 courses
33 ft ÷ 16 in ≈ 25 per course
100 × 1.05 = 105 blocks

→ 105 blocks, 25 caps, 3.1 yd³ of drainage gravel and 33 ft of pipe.

Not burying the first course (at least 4 in).
Skipping drainage: water pressure tips walls over.
Building over 4 ft without an engineer.

Bury the first course at least 4 in and level it carefully — it governs the whole wall.
