How it's calculated (visible formula)
boards = area × boards per side × 2 sides ÷ 3 m² × (1 + waste); sealing tape = wall perimeter
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure wall length and height.
- Choose the assembly (single or double board, with or without wool).
- Work out boards for both sides.
- Add mineral wool, sealing tape and sealant.
- Check estimated sound insulation against the requirement.
Worked example: 13 × 8.5 ft wall, double board with wool
- ≈ 16 boards
- Wool: 123 sq ft
- Sealing tape: 43 ft
→ 16 boards, 123 sq ft of wool and Rw ≈ 52 dB (STC ≈ 50).
Common mistakes
- Unsealed gaps — sound goes through them.
- Back-to-back electrical boxes.
- Framing without perimeter sealing tape.
Pro tips
- Isolate framing with sealing tape at floor, ceiling and walls.
- Seal every perimeter joint with acoustic sealant.
- Avoid back-to-back outlets or use putty pads.
- Fill at least 80% of the cavity with mineral wool.

FAQs
- How much does a drywall wall block?
- Single layer, no insulation: STC 33–36; double layer with wool: STC 50+.
- What do codes require between units?
- The IBC requires STC 50 between dwelling units.
- Acoustic board or double layer?
- A second standard layer helps most; acoustic board adds 3–5 dB.
- More mass or more cavity?
- Both: double board (mass) plus insulated cavity (absorption) add up.
- What if noise comes through the ceiling?
- You'll need a decoupled acoustic ceiling as well.
- Single or staggered studs?
- Staggered or double studs insulate far better.
