How it's calculated (visible formula)
downrod = ceiling height − target blade height − fan body height; rounded down to stock length
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure ceiling height from finished floor.
- Check the fan's body height in the spec sheet (with light kit if fitted).
- Choose target blade height (8–9 ft ideal).
- Downrod = ceiling − target − body.
- Pick the next shorter stock downrod.
Worked example: 10 ft ceiling, 12 in fan body, blades at 8 ft
- 120 − 96 − 12 = 12 in
- Stock size: 12 in
→ Use a 12 in downrod; blades at 8 ft.
Common mistakes
- Blades below 7 ft.
- Measuring the body without the light kit.
- Long downrods on sloped ceilings without an angle adapter.
Pro tips
- On sloped ceilings use an angle adapter and check blade clearance.
- Mount to a fan-rated box or brace.
- Balance the blades with the kit if it wobbles.
- Keep at least 18 in between blade tips and walls.

FAQs
- How high should fan blades be?
- Ideally 8–9 ft; never below 7 ft.
- What downrod for a 9 ft ceiling?
- Usually the 6 in rod supplied with the fan.
- Low ceilings?
- Use a flush-mount (hugger) fan.
- What size fan for a 12 × 12 ft room?
- About 42–48 in blade span.
- Fan with or without light?
- A light kit saves a fixture but lowers clearance.
- Can I cut a downrod?
- Some can be cut, but you must re-drill the safety pin; buy the right length.
