How it's calculated (visible formula)
kg = area × consumption by finish level (Q1 0.25; Q2 0.4; Q3 0.6; Q4 1.2 kg/m²)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure board area to finish.
- Choose the agreed finish level.
- Apply the per-area consumption for that level.
- Add waste.
- Round up to bags or buckets.
Compound use by finish level
| Level | kg/m² | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 / L1–2 | 0.25 | Under tile or unfinished |
| Q2 / L4 | 0.40 | Flat paint, normal light |
| Q3 | 0.60 | Fine finishes |
| Q4 / L5 | 1.20 | Critical light or gloss |
Worked example: 430 sq ft at a standard (Level 4 / Q2) finish
- 40 m² × 0.4 = 16 kg
- +10% = 17.6 kg (39 lb)
→ One 45 lb bag or about one 4.5 gal bucket.
Common mistakes
- Quoting a standard finish when the client expects Level 5.
- Sanding before it's dry.
- Mixing too much hot mud at once.
Pro tips
- Use setting compound for the first coat and lightweight for finish.
- Apply thin, wide coats instead of one thick one.
- Sand with fine grit and a vacuum sander to cut dust.
- Check with raking light before painting.

FAQs
- How much mud per sheet of drywall?
- Roughly 0.05–0.1 gallon per sq ft for a Level 4 finish.
- What's Level 5?
- A full skim coat over the whole surface for critical lighting.
- Powder or premixed?
- Powder for big jobs and fast setting; premixed for small ones.
- Setting or drying compound?
- Setting compound hardens chemically and shrinks less; premixed is easier to sand.
- How many coats of mud?
- At least three for a Level 4 finish: tape, fill and finish.
- Can I paint straight over mud?
- Prime first to even out absorption.
