How it's calculated (visible formula)
bags = ceil(area × depth ÷ bag size); cost = bags × price
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Work out the mulch volume: area times depth.
- Convert to bags from their size.
- Multiply by the price per bag.
- Above 3 yd³, compare with bulk price per yard.
- Add labor and debris removal for the quote.
Worked example: 270 sq ft at 3 in, 2 cu ft bags at $5
- ≈ 67.5 cu ft
- 67.5 ÷ 2 = 34 bags
- 34 × $5 = $170
→ $170 of mulch.
Common mistakes
- Comparing bag prices without matching bag sizes.
- Forgetting weed fabric.
- Leaving out yearly top-ups in a maintenance quote.
Pro tips
- Offer coarse bark as a premium option — it lasts twice as long.
- Price weed fabric separately so clients see its value.
- Buy by the pallet — discounts often start at 40–60 bags.
- Include a top-up every 2–3 years as a maintenance line.
