How it's calculated (visible formula)
skim = area × thickness (mm) × 1.6 kg/m²·mm; base = 0.4 kg/m²
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the area to skim.
- Set skim thickness (≈ 1 mm).
- Work out finishing compound by thickness.
- Add base compound for the Level 4 coats.
- Add primer.
Worked example: 430 sq ft with a 1 mm (≈ 1/32 in) skim
- 40 m² × 1 × 1.6 = 64 kg + 10% = 70 kg
- Base: 17.6 kg
→ 3 buckets of finishing compound, 1 bag of base mud and 1 gal of primer.
Common mistakes
- Skimming over poorly finished base coats.
- Over 1–2 mm in one pass.
- Not checking with raking light before painting.
Pro tips
- Finish Level 4 properly — Level 5 won't hide big flaws.
- Spray with an airless rig and flatten with a wide trowel.
- Work under raking light to catch flaws.
- Prime before painting to even the surface.
