Calculate labour, margin & VAT

How it's calculated (visible formula)

linear = area ÷ face width × (1 + waste); boards = ceil(linear ÷ length); furring = area ÷ spacing

See methodology and formula versions

How to calculate it, step by step

  1. Measure the ceiling area.
  2. Enter board face width and length.
  3. Work out linear footage with waste.
  4. Work out furring strips from spacing.
  5. Add clips or nails, one per board-strip crossing.

Worked example: 215 sq ft ceiling, 3½ in face, 8 ft boards

  1. ≈ 222 m → 244 m (800 ft) with waste
  2. 800 ÷ 8 ≈ 102 boards
  3. Furring ≈ 180 ft

→ About 102 boards, 180 ft of furring and 6 boxes of clips.

FAQs

What is face width?
The visible width once boards are joined, without the tongue.
Furring strip spacing?
16–24 in, perpendicular to the boards.
Nails or clips?
Hidden clips hold the groove and let the wood move.
Wood or PVC planks?
Wood looks warmer; PVC handles moisture in bathrooms and porches.
Which way should planks run?
Along the long dimension or perpendicular to the main window.
How do I handle recessed lights?
Cut holes with a hole saw before installing that board.
