Calculate labour, margin & VAT

How it's calculated (visible formula)

volume = area × depth; bags = ceil(volume ÷ bag size)

See methodology and formula versions

How to calculate it, step by step

  1. Measure the bed area.
  2. Choose 2–3 in of depth (more with coarse bark).
  3. Multiply area by depth for the volume.
  4. Convert to cubic feet and divide by the bag size.
  5. Buy one extra bag for edges and tree rings.

Worked example: 270 sq ft bed at 3 in

  1. 270 sq ft × 3 in ≈ 2.5 yd³ (1.9 m³)
  2. ≈ 67.5 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft bags

→ 34 bags of 2 cu ft, or 2.5 yd³ bulk.
