How it's calculated (visible formula)
weight = area × depth × (1 + waste) × density; bags = ceil(weight ÷ bag weight)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the bed or decorative area.
- Pick a depth: 1½–2 in to hide the base.
- Work out the volume and add 5% waste.
- Convert to weight with the stone's density.
- Divide by bag weight, or order a bulk bag over a ton.
Worked example: 160 sq ft bed with 2 in of river rock
- 160 sq ft × 2 in ≈ 1 yd³ with waste
- ≈ 2,700 lb (1,220 kg)
- ÷ 44 lb bags = 62
→ About 62 bags of 44 lb.
Common mistakes
- A single layer of stone over soil shows the dirt below.
- Forgetting weed fabric.
- Using very fine white stone in walkways — it stains.
Pro tips
- Always lay weed fabric first — without it weeds appear within weeks.
- Light stone reflects heat; avoid it beside sun-sensitive plants.
- Rinse dusty stone before spreading.
- Use edging to separate rock from lawn.

FAQs
- How much rock per square foot?
- At 2 in deep, about 15–17 lb per sq ft.
- How deep should landscape rock be?
- 1½–2 in to hide the base fully.
- Bags or bulk?
- For more than a ton, bulk is usually cheaper.
- Which landscape rock stays clean longest?
- Mid-tone grays and tans hide dirt better than white.
- How many pounds of rock per square foot?
- About 15–17 lb at 2 in deep.
- Rock or mulch in beds?
- Rock doesn't break down; mulch feeds the soil and holds moisture.
