How it's calculated (visible formula)
tiles = ceil(area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste)); boxes = ceil(tiles ÷ tiles per box)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure room length and width.
- Choose tile size.
- Divide the area by tile area.
- Add 5% for cut border tiles and breakage.
- Round up to full boxes.
Worked example: 20 × 16 ft room with 2 × 2 tiles
- ≈ 30 m² ÷ 0.36 ≈ 84
- +5% = 88 tiles
- 88 ÷ 16 = 5.5
→ 6 boxes of 16 tiles.
Common mistakes
- Not counting border tiles as full tiles.
- Mixing color batches.
- No spares for access panels.
Pro tips
- Handle tiles with clean gloves — they mark easily.
- Cut face-up with a sharp utility knife on a firm surface.
