How it's calculated (visible formula)
panels = ceil((length − gates × gate width) ÷ panel width); posts = panels + 1 + gates
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure length and subtract gate widths.
- Divide by panel width for panels.
- Posts = panels + 1 + one extra per gate.
- Add post caps and gate kits.
- Work out post concrete.
Worked example: 66 ft with 6 ft panels and one 4 ft gate
- (66 − 4) ÷ 6 = 10.3 → 11 panels
- 11 + 1 + 1 = 13 posts
→ 11 panels, 13 posts and caps, 1 gate kit and 26 bags of concrete.
Common mistakes
- Cutting panels without reinforcing the rail.
- No room for thermal expansion.
- Setting posts without checking plumb on two faces.
Pro tips
- Reinforce gate posts with an aluminum insert.
- Build section by section: post, panel, post.
- Leave room in the brackets for thermal expansion.
- Clean with soap and water; avoid solvents.
