How it's calculated (visible formula)
joint length = area × (1 ÷ board width + 1 ÷ board length); rolls = ceil(length × (1 + waste) ÷ roll length)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure board area to finish.
- Enter board length and width.
- Work out joint length per area.
- Add waste and round up to rolls.
- Add corner bead for outside corners.
Worked example: 430 sq ft of 4 × 8 ft boards, 33 ft of corners
- ≈ 49 m (162 ft) of joints
- +10% ≈ 178 ft
→ 1 roll of 500 ft tape and 4 lengths of corner bead.
Common mistakes
- Mesh tape in inside corners (paper is better).
- Not taping butt joints.
- Skipping the bedding coat under the tape.
Pro tips
- Bed tape in a coat of mud with no bubbles.
- Fold paper tape on its crease for inside corners.
- Use mesh tape only with setting compound.
