How it's calculated (visible formula)
pieces = area × pieces per area × (1 + waste); pallets = ceil(pieces ÷ pieces per pallet)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Work out true roof area (not footprint).
- Choose the roofing type and pieces per area.
- Multiply and add 10% waste.
- Work out ridge and hip pieces per foot.
- Round up to full pallets.
Worked example: 1,290 sq ft (12.9 squares) of asphalt shingles
- 12.9 × 3 = 38.8 bundles
- +10% = 43 bundles
- 43 ÷ 42 per pallet
→ 43 bundles (2 pallets) plus ridge cap.
Common mistakes
- Using footprint area.
- No waste for hips, valleys and cuts.
- Mixing different production lots.
Pro tips
- Follow the maker's minimum pitch and exposure.
- Use extra nails at eaves, ridges and high-wind zones.
- Order starter strip, hip and ridge and vents together.
- Keep spare bundles from the same lot.
