How it's calculated (visible formula)
area = length × width; paint = area ÷ coverage × coats; cans = ceil(paint × (1 + waste) ÷ can size)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure ceiling length and width.
- Check coverage per coat on the can.
- Decide coats (two on new ceilings or color changes).
- Work out gallons with waste.
- Round up to full cans.
Worked example: 13 × 10 ft ceiling, 400 sq ft/gal, 2 coats
- 130 sq ft ÷ 400 × 2 ≈ 0.65 gal (2.4 l)
- +10% ≈ 0.7 gal
→ One 1-gallon can.
Common mistakes
- Using wall paint — more spatter and worse coverage overhead.
- Skipping stain-blocking primer on water marks.
- Rolling parallel to the window (lap marks show).
Pro tips
- Paint the ceiling before the walls.
- Protect floors and furniture and cover outlets and switches.
- Use a medium-nap roller on an extension pole.
- Cut in the edges with a brush, then roll.
