Calculate labour, margin & GST

How it's calculated (visible formula)

walls = 2 × (length + width) × height − doors × 17.4 sq ft − windows × 15.5 sq ft (+ ceiling); paint = area ÷ coverage × coats

See methodology and formula versions

How to calculate it, step by step

  1. Measure room length, width and height.
  2. Count doors and windows.
  3. Decide whether to paint the ceiling too.
  4. Work out area and gallons from coverage and coats.
  5. Round up to cans.

Worked example: 13 × 11.5 × 8.2 ft bedroom, 1 door, 1 window

  1. ≈ 404 sq ft of wall
  2. − doors and windows ≈ 371 sq ft
  3. ÷ 400 × 2 ≈ 1.85 gal; +10% ≈ 2 gal

→ Two 1-gallon cans.
