Decking: calculate and quote

Deck boards, joists, fasteners and baluster spacing for wood or composite decks.

Calculators

How do you estimate a wood or composite deck?

Measure the area, choose board direction and work out rows, boards, joists and fasteners. On slabs use adjustable pedestals; on grade, a raised frame with ventilation and drainage.

Railings and balusters are figured separately to the code's height and 4 in rule.

Tropical hardwood, treated pine or composite?

Treated pine is cheapest but needs upkeep; tropical hardwoods (ipe, cumaru) are hard and long-lasting; composite needs little maintenance and won't splinter, though it gets hotter in sun.

Each material has its own joist spacing and fastening — follow the maker's guide.

How do you maintain a deck?

Clean yearly, check fasteners and re-oil or stain every 1–3 years for natural wood. Keep board gaps clear so water and leaves don't collect.

Inspect the substructure every few years, especially in damp areas.

FAQs

What joist spacing for decking?
16 in (40 cm) on center for most wood decking; composite often needs 12 in (30 cm) for diagonal runs. Follow the maker's sheet.
What is the maximum gap between balusters?
Most codes require a 4 in (10 cm) sphere not to pass through.
Face screws or hidden clips?
Clips leave a clean surface; screws are cheaper. The calculator counts both.
How much does a deck cost per square foot?
It varies a lot by material and framing — get boards here and add your price.
Can I deck over a balcony?
Yes, with pedestals or sleepers that don't block drainage.
Does composite get hot?
Dark colors can get very hot in sun; choose light colors in sunny spots.
