How it's calculated (visible formula)
length = pipe run + 0.3 m per fitting; pieces = ceil(length × (1 + waste) ÷ piece length)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the pipe run to insulate.
- Count elbows, tees and valves.
- Measure the pipe outside diameter.
- Pick insulation thickness for use and location.
- Work out pieces with waste and tape.
Worked example: 66 ft of ⅞ in OD (¾ in copper) pipe, 6 fittings, 1 in insulation
- 20 m + 6 × 0.3 = 21.8 m
- +10% = 24 m ÷ 2 m pieces
→ 12 pieces of 6 ft (2 m) and 1 roll of tape.
Common mistakes
- Buying a larger ID — loose insulation underperforms.
- Not sealing the seam.
- Indoor foam outdoors without UV protection.
Pro tips
- Insulate the longest hot runs and outdoor pipes first.
- Miter-cut elbows for continuous coverage.
- Seal longitudinal and butt joints.
- Protect outdoor insulation from UV.

FAQs
- What thickness of pipe insulation?
- IECC requires 1 in on most service hot water piping.
- Elastomeric or polyethylene?
- Elastomeric insulates better and handles higher temperatures.
- Cold water pipes too?
- Yes, to stop condensation in humid spaces.
- What thickness for hot water pipes?
- 1 in for most service hot water under the IECC.
- Should cold pipes be insulated?
- Yes where condensation or freezing is a risk.
- Vapor barrier or not?
- Use a vapor-retarder jacket on chilled or cold pipes.
