Flooring: calculate and quote

Hardwood, carpet, epoxy, underlayment and cost per area. From floor measurements to a flooring quote with no spreadsheets.

Calculators

How do you choose the right floor?

It depends on use and room: laminate and vinyl for tight budgets and fast installs; hardwood for warmth and longevity; carpet in bedrooms; epoxy in garages and shops. Traffic, moisture and radiant heat shape the choice.

The calculators give boxes, underlayment, baseboard and cost per area so you can compare options with real numbers.

What subfloor prep is needed?

New flooring needs a flat, dry, solid base. Dips over about ⅛ in in 6 ft get self-leveler; slab moisture is tested before wood or resin, and a vapor barrier goes over concrete.

Skipping prep is the top cause of squeaks, gaps and lifting.

How much waste for flooring?

5–10% for straight lays, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone. Small or cut-heavy rooms need a couple more points, plus spare boxes from the same lot.

Baseboard and transitions are figured separately by linear foot.

FAQs

How much waste should I add for flooring?
5–10% for straight lays; 12–15% for diagonal or herringbone because of the extra cuts.
Do I measure under fixed cabinets?
No — skip built-in cabinets and kitchen units; include areas under movable furniture.
How do I price flooring per square foot?
Material + underlayment + trim + labor, then your margin. The flooring cost calculator adds it up.
Which flooring handles water best?
Rigid-core vinyl and porcelain tile; laminate only in waterproof versions with sealed edges.
Can new flooring go over old?
Many floating floors can, if the old floor is flat and solid — check door clearances.
Best flooring over radiant heat?
Approved vinyl, tile and engineered hardwood; avoid thick solid wood.
