Calculate labour, margin & GST

How it's calculated (visible formula)

studs = ceil(length ÷ spacing) + 1 + 2 × openings; plates = 3 × length

See methodology and formula versions

How to calculate it, step by step

  1. Measure wall length and height.
  2. Pick stud spacing (16 or 24 in on center).
  3. Studs = length ÷ spacing + 1.
  4. Add two per opening (king and jack) plus corners.
  5. Work out bottom plate, double top plate and headers.

Worked example: 20 ft × 8 ft wall at 16 in OC with 2 openings

  1. 20 ft ÷ 16 in = 15 + 1 = 16
  2. +2 × 2 openings = 20
  3. +10% → 22 studs

→ 22 studs, 60 ft of plate and 8 ft of header.

FAQs

Stud spacing?
16 in on center is standard; 24 in for advanced framing where allowed.
Why a double top plate?
It ties wall sections together and spreads loads between studs.
How many studs per foot of wall?
A quick rule is one stud per foot of wall, which covers corners and openings.
Can I use metal studs instead?
Yes for non-load-bearing walls; wood is still standard for bearing walls.
2×4 or 2×6 studs?
2×6 allows thicker insulation and is common on exterior walls.
How do I frame a corner?
Three-stud corners or California corners leave nailing for drywall.
