How it's calculated (visible formula)
volume = area × depth × (1 + waste); weight = volume × density
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the area and depth of the sand layer.
- Multiply for the volume and add 5% waste.
- Convert to weight with sand density (100 lb/ft³ dry).
- Divide by bag weight or round up to bulk bags.
- If the sand is damp, expect more weight and a little more volume.
Worked example: 108 sq ft sandbox, 2 in leveling layer
- 108 sq ft × 2 in ≈ 0.67 yd³; +5% → 0.7 yd³
- ≈ 1,850 lb (840 kg)
→ 34 bags of 55 lb, or 1 bulk bag.
Common mistakes
- Using fine play sand for mortar or bases.
- Ignoring bulking of damp sand.
- Buying bags for over a cubic yard.
Pro tips
- For paver bedding use washed coarse concrete sand, never beach sand.
- For sandboxes, buy washed play sand without fines or stones.
- Keep sand covered — wet sand is heavier and upsets mortar mixes.
- Adjust mixing water when sand arrives damp.
