How it's calculated (visible formula)
main runners ≈ 0.83 m/m² (every 4 ft); 4 ft tees ≈ 1.39 per m²; 2 ft tees ≈ 1.39 per m² (2×2 only); wall angle = perimeter
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the room and draw a centered grid layout.
- Install wall angle at finished height with a laser.
- Hang main runners every 4 ft.
- Add 4 ft cross tees and, for 2×2, 2 ft tees.
- Hang wires every 4 ft along each main.
Worked example: 20 × 16 ft room, 2 × 2 tiles
- ≈ 30 m² × 0.83 × 1.05 ≈ 26 m → 8 mains
- ≈ 44 four-foot tees (and 44 two-foot tees)
- Wall angle ≈ 76 ft
→ 8 mains, 44 + 44 tees, 76 ft of angle and 21 hangers.
Common mistakes
- Starting the grid at a wall — uneven border tiles.
- Not leveling with a laser before tiling.
- Hanging grid from ductwork instead of structure.
Pro tips
- Center the grid so border tiles are equal on both sides.
- Hang from structure, never from ducts or pipes.
- Square the first grid by measuring diagonals.
- Face cut tile edges toward the least visible wall.

FAQs
- How far apart are main runners?
- 4 ft on center, parallel to the long wall.
- How many hanger wires?
- One every 4 ft along each main — about 0.07 per sq ft.
- How long is a main runner?
- 12 ft, with splice ends.
- Minimum clearance for a drop ceiling?
- At least 3–4 in below joists; more for lights and ducts.
- White or black grid?
- White is standard; black or colored for design.
- Can lights hang from the grid?
- Only light fixtures rated for it; heavy fixtures need independent support.
