How it's calculated (visible formula)
volume = area × depth; bags = ceil(volume ÷ bag size)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the bed area.
- Choose 2–3 in of depth (more with coarse bark).
- Multiply area by depth for the volume.
- Convert to cubic feet and divide by the bag size.
- Buy one extra bag for edges and tree rings.
Worked example: 270 sq ft bed at 3 in
- 270 sq ft × 3 in ≈ 2.5 yd³ (1.9 m³)
- ≈ 67.5 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft bags
→ 34 bags of 2 cu ft, or 2.5 yd³ bulk.
Common mistakes
- Spreading less than 2 in, so weeds push through.
- Piling mulch against tree trunks ("volcano mulching").
- Skipping fabric underneath in very weedy areas.
Pro tips
- Keep mulch 2–4 in away from trunks and stems to prevent rot.
- Water before mulching — mulch holds the moisture already there.
- Pine bark acidifies slightly: great for hydrangeas and azaleas.
- Pull weeds before spreading or they'll push through.

- How many bags of mulch in a yard?
- 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft, or 9 bags of 3 cu ft.
- How often should I re-mulch?
- Top up 1 in each year or two as it breaks down.
- How many bags of mulch for 100 sq ft?
- At 3 in deep, about 13 bags of 2 cu ft.
- Does mulch attract termites?
- It can shelter insects; keep it 12 in away from wooden siding.
