Calculate labour, margin & GST

How it's calculated (visible formula)

volume = area × depth × (1 + waste); weight = volume × density

See methodology and formula versions

How to calculate it, step by step

  1. Measure the area and depth of the sand layer.
  2. Multiply for the volume and add 5% waste.
  3. Convert to weight with sand density (100 lb/ft³ dry).
  4. Divide by bag weight or round up to bulk bags.
  5. If the sand is damp, expect more weight and a little more volume.

Worked example: 108 sq ft sandbox, 2 in leveling layer

  1. 108 sq ft × 2 in ≈ 0.67 yd³; +5% → 0.7 yd³
  2. ≈ 1,850 lb (840 kg)

→ 34 bags of 55 lb, or 1 bulk bag.
