How it's calculated (visible formula)
salt (kg) = volume (m³) × (target ppm − current ppm) ÷ 1000
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Work out pool volume.
- Test current salinity.
- Check the chlorinator's recommended level.
- Work out pounds from the ppm difference.
- Broadcast salt around the edge with the pump running.
Worked example: 11,840 gal from 0 to 3,200 ppm
- 44.8 m³ × 3,200 ÷ 1000 ≈ 143 kg
- ≈ 316 lb ÷ 40 lb bags
→ 8 bags of 40 lb.
Common mistakes
- Dumping all salt without circulating and testing.
- Overshooting the chlorinator range.
- Using salt with unsuitable additives.
Pro tips
- Add salt in two stages and test before topping up.
- Use pool-grade salt without iodine or anti-caking agents.
- Turn the chlorinator off until salt dissolves.
- Inspect and clean the cell each season.

FAQs
- How much salt for a saltwater pool?
- Usually 3,000–3,500 ppm — about 30 lb per 1,000 gal from zero.
- How long to dissolve?
- About 24 hours with the pump running.
- How often do I add salt?
- Only to replace losses from splash-out, backwashing and rain.
- How much salt does a pool lose per year?
- Only what leaves with water: splash-out, backwash and rain.
- Does salt damage pool surfaces?
- Not at 3,000–4,000 ppm, but protect metal and natural stone.
- How do I lower salinity?
- Drain and refill part of the water.
