How it's calculated (visible formula)
pavers = area ÷ ((length + joint) × (width + joint)) × (1 + waste)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the area and plan drainage slope (1–2%).
- Pick paver size and joint width to get pavers per area.
- Add 5% waste (8–10% for many cuts or herringbone).
- Work out compacted base and bedding sand from their depths.
- Add joint sand and edge restraint.
Worked example: 215 sq ft with 4 × 8 in pavers, ⅛ in joints
- (8.125 × 4.125 in) ≈ 0.233 sq ft per paver
- 215 ÷ 0.233 ≈ 923
- +5% → 970 pavers
→ About 970 pavers, 1.1 yd³ of sand and 4.9 yd³ of base.
Common mistakes
- Not compacting the base, which causes ruts and sinking.
- Ordering without waste when edges need many cuts.
- Forgetting edge restraint.
Pro tips
- Compact base in 4 in lifts with a plate compactor.
- Screed bedding sand with rails and never walk on it before laying.
- Start from a square corner and pull string lines every few rows.
- Plate-compact the pavers with a rubber pad after sanding the joints.

FAQs
- How many 4 × 8 pavers per square foot?
- 4.5 without joints; about 4.3 with ⅛ in joints.
- How thick should the base be?
- 4–6 in of compacted base for walkways; 8–12 in for driveways.
- How much bedding sand?
- 1 in of coarse concrete sand, screeded but not compacted before laying.
- How many pavers per square foot?
- 4 × 8 in pavers: about 4.3–4.5 per sq ft depending on joint.
- What thickness for driveways?
- 80 mm (3⅛ in) pavers for vehicles; 60 mm for walkways.
- Do I need edge restraint?
- Yes — without it pavers spread apart over time.
