How it's calculated (visible formula)
gallons = area ÷ coverage per coat × coats; pails = ceil(gallons ÷ pail size)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure the pavement area.
- Clean and fill cracks first.
- Enter sealer coverage per coat.
- Work out gallons for the coats.
- Round up to full pails.
Worked example: 2,150 sq ft at 120 sq ft/gal, 2 coats, 5 gal pails
- 2,150 ÷ 120 × 2 ≈ 36 gal (133 l)
- ÷ 5 gal
→ 8 pails of 5 gal (7 of 20 l).
Common mistakes
- Sealing new asphalt too soon (wait 3–6 months).
- One thick coat instead of two thin ones.
- Not filling cracks first.
Pro tips
- Apply above 50 °F with no rain for 24 h.
- Stir thoroughly to mix the sand.
- Apply thin crossing coats with a squeegee or sprayer.
- Keep traffic off 24–48 h.
