How it's calculated (visible formula)
courses = ceil(height ÷ block height); blocks = courses × ceil(length ÷ block length) × (1 + waste)
- Net geometric measurement, no waste.
- Adjustable waste % for cuts and breakage.
- Purchase rounded up to sellable units (boxes, bags, buckets, boards).
How to calculate it, step by step
- Measure wall length and exposed height plus the buried course.
- Divide height by block height for the number of courses.
- Divide length by block length for blocks per course.
- Multiply, add 5% waste and the cap blocks.
- Work out drainage gravel, drain pipe and filter fabric.
Worked example: 33 ft × 32 in wall with 16 × 8 in blocks
- 32 ÷ 8 = 4 courses
- 33 ft ÷ 16 in ≈ 25 per course
- 100 × 1.05 = 105 blocks
→ 105 blocks, 25 caps, 3.1 yd³ of drainage gravel and 33 ft of pipe.
Common mistakes
- Not burying the first course (at least 4 in).
- Skipping drainage: water pressure tips walls over.
- Building over 4 ft without an engineer.
Pro tips
- Bury the first course at least 4 in and level it carefully — it governs the whole wall.
- Use the system's setback each course so the wall leans into the soil.
- Daylight the drain pipe to a low point; never leave it dead-ended.
- Above 4 ft, or with surcharge, get an engineered design.

FAQs
- How tall can I build without an engineer?
- Most codes allow up to 4 ft (1.2 m) with no surcharge; taller walls need engineering.
- Why gravel behind the wall?
- It lets water out so hydrostatic pressure doesn't push the wall over.
- Do I need a footing?
- A 6 in compacted gravel leveling pad for dry-stack block walls.
- What base does a block wall need?
- A trench with 6 in of compacted base and a thin leveling sand layer.
- Does a dry-stack wall need reinforcement?
- Short gravity walls don't; taller ones may need geogrid per the engineer.
- What goes behind the wall?
- Clean drainage gravel for the first 12 in and compacted soil behind.
